When Life Feels Like a Valley of Dry Bones

In Ezekiel 37:5-6, God told the dry bones, “Watch this: I’m bringing the breath of life to you and you’ll come to life. I’ll attach sinews to you, put meat on your bones, cover you with skin, and breathe life into you. You’ll come alive and you’ll realize that I am God!”

This message isn’t just a vision, it’s a promise of life and life abundantly. We see this promise reflected in the New Testament in John 10:10 as well when Christ was speaking to the Pharisees near the Temple in Jerusalem. There Jesus states, “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”

This is a promise that even when something feels lifeless, even when hope feels distant, even when your faith feels worn down…

God can breath life back into your heart again.

If you’re in a season where your faith feels dry, where prayer feels empty or hard, you are not alone. And you are not beyond restoration.

When Faith Feels Broken

There are seasons in life that don’t just challenge your schedule or your energy, they go beyond that and challenge the very core of your soul and the faith you build your life foundation upon.

A resent tragedy, prolonged stress leading to burnout, unanswered prayers that make you question, or simply the weight of everyday life can slowly drain what once felt strong and steady. What used to come naturally - praying, trusting, hoping - may now feel distant or even difficult to reach, much less obtain.

You may still believe in God.
You may still love Him deeply.
But something feels… off.

Prayer might feel quieter now and it is not because you don’t care, but because you’re tired. Words don’t come as easily to mind. Sometimes all you have is silence, or a sigh, or tears that say more than sentences ever could.

Hope may feel softer, too. Not gone, just harder to hold onto and more like a flicker instead of a flame.

And your strength? You feel stretched thin and exhaustion seems to be your middle name. You know, the kind of tired that sleep doesn’t fix. The kind that lives deeper than the surface of your physical body, it touches your very soul.

Parents, yet in the middle of all of this… your child still needs you.

They still need your presence.
Your guidance.
Your reassurance.

And that creates a tension that’s hard to explain… trying to pour into your child while quietly feeling empty yourself.

If this is where you are, take heart in this truth:

God is not asking you to be full… He is asking you to be present.

In Ezekiel 37:5-6, the valley of dry bones wasn’t brought back to life by effort or striving. The bones didn’t fix themselves. They didn’t gather strength or figure out a way forward.

They simply were.

And God did the rest.

He brought the pieces together.
He restored what was disconnected.
He breathed life where there was none.

That same gentle, powerful process still exists today.

When your faith feels broken, God is not standing at a distance waiting for you to “get it together.” He is near, in the quiet, in the questions, in the moments when you don’t have the energy to do anything more than just show up.

Sometimes faith doesn’t look like bold declarations.
Sometimes it looks like staying.
Like continuing.
Like whispering, “God, I’m still here,” even when you feel unsure.

And that is enough.

Because just like you are holding onto your child…
God is holding onto you even more securely.

Hebrews 13:5-6 says, “Don’t be obsessed with getting more material things. Be relaxed with what you have. Since God assured us, “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,” we can boldly quote,

God is there, ready to help;
I’m fearless no matter what.
Who or what can get to me?”

In other words, you don’t have to force healing, you don’t have to manufacture strength, you don’t have to have perfect words or perfect faith.

You simply have to allow space for God to breathe life back into the places that feel worn, quiet, or empty.

And little by little, just like in the valley of dry bones, what feels lifeless will begin to stir again.

Not all at once.
But gently. Faithfully. Completely.

Because God is still in the business of restoration and He has not forgotten you.
